Mercedes-Benz Hits the Road With Mylo™ in the VISION EQXX
Mercedes-Benz recently unveiled the VISION EQXX, “reinventing the car as we know it.” Announced at the Digital World Premiere in early 2022, the electric concept car embodies the future of automotive efficiency and sustainable luxury, featuring both groundbreaking technology and interior finishings made from nature-based materials, including Mylo™. Through the VISION EQXX, we’re thrilled to push boundaries with Mercedes-Benz and continue to explore new possibilities with Mylo.
Paving the Path for Road Trips of the Future
“The VISION EQXX is all about creating a holistically better electric car — that looks stunning and futuristic, too… The VISION EQXX is a statement. It’s the most efficient Mercedes ever.” – Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG
Mylo’s first big debut beyond the fashion world is also a first for the auto industry. Never before has a mycelium-based leather alternative been used in the construction of a car. Appearing in white in the VISION EQXX car seats, this application showcases Mylo’s versatility and high-quality performance.
Determined to build the world’s most desirable electric cars, Mercedes-Benz now has a roadmap for their most efficient car — ever. The VISION EQXX surpasses the EQS electric sedan, Mercedes-Benz’s most aerodynamic production vehicle on the road. Thanks to best-in-class materials, a lighter, smaller battery pack, and an exceptionally aero-efficient design, the VISION EQXX has a range of more than 620 miles on a single charge, with a drag coefficient of just 0.17. For comparison, the Porsche 911 Turbo has a drag coefficient of 0.33, as reported by CNN.
An Entirely New Ecosystem of Healthier Materials
Every detail is considered across the car’s interior and exterior to maximize efficiency and comfort. Lighter materials — including brakes made with aluminum alloy and springs made with reinforced plastic instead of metal — paired with solar cells on the roof, a sleek touch screen that dims when not in use, and Mercedes-Benz’s signature star cloud avatar, all lend to a luxuriously futuristic feel.
“This minimalistic and high-tech design approach echoes throughout the entire interior… New sustainable materials throughout the interior like bamboo fibre, AMSilk or Mylo showcase a whole new level of responsibility. It provides all you need — no more, no less.” – Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG
Mylo is part of a healthy ecosystem of innovative materials used within the VISION EQXX that meet Mercedes-Benz’s high design standards with a lower carbon footprint. Mylo’s sleek aesthetic is complemented by other nature-inspired materials like cactus-based Deserttex®, carpets made from bamboo, and door pulls made from a vegan silk-like fabric by AMSilk.
Even out-of-sight applications, including UBQ™, a waste-based material used to fill empty spaces in the frame, further demonstrate Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to innovation. All these elements, and more, seamlessly flow together for a smooth, sustainable ride.
Driving Change Through Visionary Design
“Our collaboration with Mercedes-Benz demonstrates the road ahead for Mylo. After debuting with some of the most celebrated fashion brands in the world, we knew it was just the beginning. Mylo is as versatile as it is sustainable, with the potential to have an impact from the runway to the roadway and beyond.” – Dan Widmaier, Bolt Threads Founder & CEO
While the VISION EQXX is currently a dreamy concept car, it’s not far from reality. According to CNET, Mercedes-Benz plans to put a car with the same battery and many other features into production in 2024. Until then, the vision alone reveals Mylo’s potential to drive change across industries while paving the way for road trips of the future.
